"The Last One’s Standing"

SHAKERS (1747 Manchester, England-     )  In 1774, this religious group avoiding prosecution, eight of them fled and emigrated to the new world. They survived in the U.S. and during the time of the Civil War the Shaker community grew to over 6, 000 members. The Shaker religion established one of the most successful religious communities of the 19th century. The Shakers were innovators and known for their high quality of hand-made furniture, including chairs, tables and especially their Shaker boxes They invented the circular saw and clothespins. Vintage clothespins are very collectible and rarely found outside of New England.

It takes five years for a new member to gain full Shaker status. Devotion and hard work especially during the winter have caused some potential members to give up the life after only a few months.  The last four members are Sister Francis, leader of the Shaker Community, who passed away on January 2, 2017.  Brother Wayne left the village to marry a Boston Globe reporter. As of September 2024, this leaves two Shakers left, Brother Arnold and Sister June.  Growing Up Shaker by Sister Frances A. Carr (1927-2017). Published by United Society of Shakers, 1995 third printing. Sister Frances was the leader of the Shakers for many decades. She joined the Shakers when she was only ten years old and became the public face of the Shakers. Sister Frances signed this copy adding a three-word sentiment. Very rare is that this book was also signed (in person) by Brother Arnold, 69 years old, Brother Wayne and Sister June, 88 years old.

This treasure is signed by the last four Shakers and only Brother Arnold and Sister June are still alive. All four signatures are in fine condition. Possibly unique...........................
