SEWARD, William H. (1801-1872). Twelfth Governor of New York (1839-1842).  Served as U.S. Secretary of State under Lincoln and Johnson (1861-1869).  He helped deter the United Kingdom and France from recognizing the independence of the Confederate States.  He was a target and severely wounded during the 1965 assassination of President Lincoln.  Seward negotiated the Alaskan purchase in 1867.    Manuscript letter signed, one very full page, Washington, August 22, 1866.  To My Dear Sir (E.G. Spaulding) Many thanks for your kind invitation to be able to visit you but my stay in Buffalo will be very short and possibly may preclude what time would be a very happy meeting. Faithfully yours,  William H. Seward.” E.G. Spaulding, Esquire Buffalo, New York.  With original envelope bearing the Department of State red wax seal.

E.G. Spaulding opposed slavery. He supported the idea for the first U.S. currency not backed by gold. This was to help pay for the costs of the Civil War.

He is the author of the greenback currency of the U.S. His speeches at Buffalo and Washington were held to ratify the nomination of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin for president and vice-president
