SEWARD, William H. (1801-1872). Twelfth Governor of New York (1839-1842). Served as U.S. Secretary of State under Lincoln and Johnson (1861-1869). He helped deter the United Kingdom and France from recognizing the independence of the Confederate States. He was a target and severely wounded during the 1965 assassination of President Lincoln. Seward negotiated the Alaskan purchase in 1867. Department of State envelope hand addressed: “Mrs. William H.
