Most Unusual Manuscript Document Signed as President
JOHNSON, Andrew (188-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States (1865-1869). Vice-President March-April 1865 under Lincoln. Governor of Tennessee (185-1857). Differences between Congress and the President with regard to reconstruction policies led to his impeachment proceedings (1868). Manuscript document signed, one page small folio, Wahington 1/9/67 to “The Senate of the United States.” Johnson transmits a communication from the Secretary of the Navy in answer to a Resolution of the Senate regarding employment of officers in the Navy Yards of the U.S, and at the Norfolk Navy Yard. On the verso in another hand reads basically the same content ending “1867 January 9 Read and referred to the Com. On Naval Affairs.
