ASSAD, Hafez Al (1930-2000). President of Syria (1971-2000). Prime Minister (1970-71) and Head of the Air Force. He established Syria as a powerful presence in the Middle East. When challenges to his authority arose, he crushed them without mercy. He was a brutal dictator and counted on the Soviet Union for support. He dominated Syria for decades.
