DANIKEN, Erich von (1935-2026) Swiss author of dozens of books which made claims of extraterrestrial influence on early human culture. His most well known book Chariots of the Gods (1968) was beyond a best seller. Daniken was one of the most figures responsible for popularizing ancient astronauts. Early in his career he was convicted and served time on several accounts of fraud and embezzlement. He was involved in jewelry deal which resulted in a 9 month conviction. In 1968 he was arrested for fraud and falsifying hotel records. Two years later he was convicted again for fraud and forgery while living a “Playboy” lifestyle. He was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. His first book Chariots of the Gods sold beyond his imagination. His second book Gods From Outer Space was written while he was in prison. Other authors have written books based on Daniken’s ideas. His books have been translated into 32 languages and have sold more than 63 million copies. He is the author of 49 books.
