37 Year old pilot, 4th to die in a motor powered plane
DELAGRANGE, Leon (1872-1910) Pioneer French aviator, ranked as one of the top aviators in the world. The second flight of his first aeroplane ended in a crash and was damaged beyond repair. His second plane was called Delagrange II. He was issued French License #3. He is credited with carrying the first female to go up in a heavier than air machine. He established a speed record for one mile and eight yards in one minute and 47 seconds. On July 4, 1910, Delagrange took off and suddenly he began a steep turn, the wings folded, and the aircraft smashed into the ground killing him instantly. His skull was crushed by the weight of the motor. This was witnessed by many spectators. Delagrange was decorated as a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
